Delaware Archaeology Museum
The Delaware Archaeology Museum is housed in the Old Presbyterian Church of Dover. The building, constructed in 1790 to replace an earlier log meeting house, served its congregation until 1924 when a new church was dedicated at the corner of State and Reed streets. In 1947, the building was presented to the State of Delaware and, after renovation, opened as the Delaware State Museum in 1950.
The cemetery surrounding the museum is still maintained by the Presbyterian Church of Dover. Distinguished Delawareans who are interred here include Colonel John Haslet, commander of the Delaware Regiment who was killed during the Battle of Princeton in 1777; John M. Clayton (c. 1767-1857), United States Secretary of State; and Governors Jacob Stout (c. 1767-1857), Charles Polk (1788-1857), and J. Caleb Boggs (1909-1993).
The church was the site of the 2nd State Constitutional Convention (1791-1792) chaired by John Dickinson, and the 3rd State Constitutional Convention, held in 1831. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Located in the same complex is the Museum of Small Town Life which was originally built in 1880 as a Sunday school building for the church.
