Division seeks descendants of unmarked remains found near Greenwood, Kent County

In accordance with Title 7 Delaware Code, Chapter 54, the Director of the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, Department of State, hereby gives notice of the discovery of unmarked human skeletal remains. The remains were discovered during construction work on private property located on Hickman Road, near Adamsville, west of Greenwood, Kent County, Delaware.

The number of burials, and the age, gender and ethnicity of the individuals is uncertain. The remains of at least three individuals are represented, likely including an adult male, an adult female, and a juvenile. The date of the burials is unknown but is likely between 1780 and 1900. Research is ongoing, but currently indicates that around 1836 Roger Adams acquired the property from John Bullock, who inherited it from his father Richard Bullock. The descendants of the Adams family (Charles Sr., Charles Jr., Mary (or Mollie) West, and Daniel) owned and occupied the land until 1913, when it was sold to Walton and Hilda Owens. It is unclear if any of the prior owners of the property were buried here. There may also have been tenants or laborers living on the land and buried on the property.

Any persons who have reason to believe they may be lineal descendants of these individuals or have evidence that their relatives are buried in an unmarked cemetery on this property should contact the Director, Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, 29 North State Street, Dover, DE 19901-3611; telephone 302-736-7400 weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. within thirty (30) days of this Notice (no later than December 11, 2026).
