Thank you, volunteers!
HCA volunteers donate over 4,000 hours in 2024
By Jennifer Bowman, HCA’s volunteer services coordinator
As 2024 comes to a close, the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA) would like to take an opportunity to recognize all of those who have generously donated their time throughout 2024.
HCA is deeply committed and engaged in fostering a historical narrative that is more inclusive, that shines a light on the darkness of racism and discrimination, through service to the community and by serving as stewards of Delaware’s history and cultures. Every year, HCA is supported in its mission to “serve Delaware residents and visitors by identifying, preserving, and interpreting Delaware history.” This can only be done with the support of a community of dedicated volunteers.
Over the past year, 170 people — from age 12 to 89 — generously donated their time to HCA, working events at historic sites across the state, including the John Dickinson Plantation, the New Castle Court House Museum, Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site, Belmont Hall, the Pencader Heritage Museum, Fenwick Island Lighthouse and the Zwaanendael Museum. Volunteers reported 4,380 hours 2024, which is equal to about $146,753 of skilled labor and time, according to the national volunteer wage equivalent calculations.
HCA is always looking for ways to expand its community service impact, and is indebted to the hundreds of people who currently and previously volunteered their valuable time and skills to preserve and interpret Delaware history. Thank you!

National Day of Service in Delaware
Shortly after 2024 comes to a close, Martin Luther King Jr.’s 30th annual National Day of Service offers another opportunity for Delawareans to lend a hand to their own communities. Jan. 20, 2025, is an anniversary of remembrance and recognition for all that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. did to advocate for civil rights, without violence. To join events (or add events to the calendar), check out opportunities statewide at Volunteer Delaware online at volunteer.delaware.gov/days-of-service.
