The Delaware State Employees’ Charitable Campaign (SECC) provides state employees with the opportunity to support organizations that provide services benefitting the health and welfare of residents of the State of Delaware. State agencies can raise money by hosting collections during special events or when employees send digital donations through E-pledge, which allows employees to donate to any charities choosing as either a one-time donation or by opting to have donations deducted directly from their paychecks throughout the year.

With the statewide goal of over $300,000, state agencies like the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA) were encouraged to come up with unique, fun and creative ways to involve staff in fundraising efforts for a good cause during the annual Delaware State Employees’ Charitable Campaign (SECC).

Over 150 nonprofit organizations participated in the 2023 SECC, which runs annually September through the end of October. This year, the chair and captains of the division’s SECC efforts were Deputy Director Amy Golden-Shepherd, Social Media Lead Desiree May and Business Services Manager Asia Surguy along with assistance from Administrative Support Specialist Sharon Richey.

The division hosted seven activities that were created to raise money for Meals on Wheels Delaware, PAWS for People and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc.

The activities included:

My Team Day: Staff were encouraged to wear their favorite sports team attire (professional, college or high school teams and more).

Wacky Wednesday: Staff were encouraged to wear their wackiest outfit (mix and match, pajamas, colorful attire, etc.) to let their personalities shine.

Connect 4 Tournament/Pizza Party: Staff were encouraged to partake in a little friendly competition. The goal was to connect with fellow HCA colleagues and enjoy playing rounds of Connect 4 while enjoying pizza.

Triple C Contest (Cookies, Candy Cake): Staff were encouraged to bake or bring their favorite cookie, candy or cake treats!

Breast Cancer Awareness Presentation: Staff were encouraged to attend a presentation by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition to learn and share information on breast cancer awareness.

PAWS for People DeStress Event: Staff were encouraged to participate in a very relaxing DeStress event with three special pups! Staff had the opportunity to pet, relax and play with the puppies and get to know more about the PAWS for People organization.

Halloween Costume/Dress as your Favorite Historical Figure Day: Staff were encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes or get creative and dress as their favorite historical figures for the day!

Winners crowned in most of these activities received a prize or were entered in a special drawing. Between these special events and other donations, the division raised over $1,500, far surpassing the original goal of $300! This annual fundraiser event gave staff the opportunity not only to raise money for a good cause but also to enjoy new memories with staff while also having some fun participating in morale-boosting activities for the agency! In addition to staff having the option to donate to participate in events and activities, staff members also were entered in to win other prizes for participating, including gift cards, internal incentives, fall décor baskets, a custom SECC candy basket and more!
