On Tuesday, Sept. 27 and Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, seventeen Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs staff members volunteered their services at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford. Activities included interacting with, and providing assistance to, veterans in playing bingo; serving lunch and then dining with residents; and planting chrysanthemums in flower beds at the site. The events were organized by Bridget Wallace, coordinator of the division’s Volunteer Program. Participating staff included Ryan Cardwell, Michael Cinque, Jackie Collins, Tammy Dayton, Susan Emory, Betsy Gant, Patricia Gerken, Gloria Henry, Vertie Lee, Dylan Lister, Desiree May, Edward McWilliams, Jan Rettig, Lynn Riley, Jim Schilling, Tim Slavin and Bridget Wallace.
Commenting on his experiences during the volunteer session, Edward McWilliams noted that the staff members of the Delaware Veterans Home were “very courteous and appreciative of our volunteer efforts. … It was a humbling experience for me personally to be able to provide assistance to some of the veterans in order that they could participate socially to play bingo. I believe it was a great honor for division staff to visit and engage with these brave Americans.”
