"The Spice Box"
Grade Level: K-2 "Pirates of the East Coast and Davy Jones Bingo" A program introducing students to the lives and historical context of the pirates, both men and women, who raided the East Coast, including the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. In experiencing the Lewes historical timeline exhibit, students learn about the role that pirates played in Delaware Bay and River trade during the 17th and early 18th centuries. In a bingo game, students match individual pirates to relevant facts of their careers. Students examine the history of piracy, the lore of pirates, the myths, some of the reasons for piracy, and crime and punishment in society. Grade Level: Grade 3 "The Merchants of Lewes and their Stores" A program introducing students to a unique institution, the merchant's store, which gave personality and flavor to towns like Lewes during the Colonial period in Delaware. The Lewes historical timeline exhibit introduces the changing commerce of the area and Delaware. Then, students gain skills in reading and analyzing primary sources, like ledgers and probate inventories, along with artifacts to reconstruct the economic and social importance of merchants and trade. This program is an engaging way to learn about the global economy, household and business economics, pricing systems, profit margins, and customer service - colonial style. Grade Level: Grade 4 "Life at Sea" A program introducing students to the world of a sailor and allows students to investigate items that would have been carried, used and manufactured by a typical 18th century or 19th century sailor. Students start by learning about Lewes' maritime heritage through an historical timeline exhibit that allows them to examine the influence of the town's location on its residents in regard to their livelihoods. Then, students experience a craft through interpretation and a hands-on activity with an interactive outdoor block and tackle station. Grade Level: Grade 5 "Archaeology Detectives: Investigating Lewes" A program engaging students in hands-on activities with artifacts and equipment that describe the archaeological concepts of context, chronology, technology and preservation. Students discover the unique challenges archaeologists face in working on land and in the sea in Delaware. An innovative search through the museum also challenges students to collect information by answering questions about artifacts related to each gallery. Grade Level: Grade 3 "The Many Faces of the War of 1812" A program introducing students to the unique people who helped establish this country as a world power by looking at the political, social, and economic roles they performed during the War of 1812. Through activities focusing on exhibited objects of the period and primary source material, students will gain a fuller appreciation of the wide range of contributions to American war effort made not only by generals and statesmen, but also by residents of Delaware. Special emphasis is placed on the Bombardment of Lewes that took place during the war in 1813 and Hannah Wolfe Burton's account of the event. Grade Level: Grade 5
