Local students explore history in Delaware

Field Trips on The Greens, homeschool groups host interactive learning experiences in Spring 2025

Area students visit Dover in May 2025 for "Saving the Past, Shaping the Future: Field Trips on the Green."

This spring, Delaware’s historic sites hosted educational events to teach about the history and environment of the First State. These events include the recent “Saving the Past, Shaping the Future: Field Trips on the Green” and visits from local homeschool groups.

In May, The Dover Green at the First State National Historical Park hosted the free Field Trips on The Green. The events, held in the spring at The Dover Green and in the fall at The New Castle Green, is a collaboration between Delaware State Parks, the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the National Park Service and numerous other conservation organizations and agencies that aims to offer preservation-centered education and provide “hands-on, minds-on activities for fourth-grade students.”

From learning about the role of archaeology in uncovering historic lifeways to reading about life along the Nanticoke River, students participated in a series of activities that touched on native history, industrial developments and much more.

Local homeschoolers also recently visited Delaware’s historic sites for a hands-on learning experience.
