Pardon our appearance: Work underway at Richardson

Have you noticed a different work-in-progress look at Richardson Hall on N. State Street lately? That’s renovation underway!

Since the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA) relocated its offices to 29 N. State St. in March 2022, it has undertaken several restoration and preservation projects at the site, reflecting HCA’s commitment to the revitalization of downtown Dover and the renovation, preservation and adaptive reuse of Delaware’s historic landmarks.

This summer, the building has been getting a facelift with the repair and replacement of 60-plus original windows, as well as porch and railing repairs and exterior painting. HCA completed the restoration of the building in early 2022, and exterior work is expected to be completed this fall.

Renovation work on Richardson Hall is underway August 2024

Richardson Hall, which was built in the 1880s, occupies the corner lot at N. State Street and Delaware Avenue. Upon completion in 1882, this imposing brick residence became the home of Harry Richardson and his family for many years. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as a contributing resource within the Victorian Dover Historic District, as it anchors a group of Victorian dwellings along Dover’s fashionable State Street.
