Pardon our appearance: Work slated for New Castle Court House Museum
Construction is expected to be underway this summer at the New Castle Court House Museum as repairs and replacements are completed on the structure’s wood railings and areas around the cupola.
The current railings and cupola designs are from a 1950s restoration. Replacements will accurately reflect the historic colonial revival and early American styles. Repairs will also mean the building’s exterior lighting will once again be operational. Plans are to update the roof’s lighting system with new LED lights that will have various color option settings.
Much of the deterioration can be found on the roof area near the cupola, which was restored sometime in the 1950s. While there is now more insight into what would have been a truly historically accurate design, the current one reflects the colonial revival and early preservation movements in the U.S. All processes and plans have been reviewed and approved by both the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service.
The restoration work is expected to take several months, and visitors shouldn’t notice any impact other than the visuals and sounds of ongoing work.
