  • August 3: Wade Catts will be discussing recent archaeology work at Fort Casimir in “A Fortress…which the Hollanders call Fort Casimir: Searching for Fort Casimir, 1905-2019.” Where was Fort Casimir in today’s City of New Castle? Are there any remains of the fort? Researchers have looked for more than a century to find the site of this Delaware icon. This presentation summarizes the story of the historical, archaeological, and topographical research and exciting discovery – more aptly, rediscovery – of the site of Fort Casimir.
  • August 10: Mike Dixon will be presenting his “From Here to There:  Ferries & Bridges Cross the Delaware.” In early times, crossing the First State’s waterways, particularly the mighty Delaware River, presented a challenge. Getting from here to there often depended on river conditions, and the pre-bridge solution was the ferry. This program looks at the story of getting from here to there in the era of ferries, with a particular emphasis on the Delaware River. Ferries were put out of business once the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened in 1951.
  • August 17: Kalmar Nyckel will be presenting “Kalmar Nyckel Yesterday and Today.” This program tells all about the original Kalmar Nyckel and New Sweden, then transitions to the construction and launch of the replica Kalmar Nyckel in the 1990s.
  • August 24: Keith Henley of the American Historical Theatre will portray James Forten, an African American abolitionist and sailor, and explore his work at sea following the Revolutionary War.
  • August 31: Bill Manthorpe will introduce Captain Thomas Read, an often forgotten Revolutionary War hero from New Castle. It will highlight his role in the creation of the Continental Navy, note his recognition as the “First Commodore of an American Fleet.” His efforts in conjunction with his friend John Barry to support Washington at Valley Forge will be described. His later service for the navy and as a merchant captain will be discussed.
