Anniversary Events

In honor of the 250th anniversary of Dickinson's letters the State of Delaware, the John Dickinson Plantation & other organizations throughout the state will be hosting events, lectures, and programs at their respective sites. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed here are free and open to the public.


John Dickinson: Penman of the Revolution

September 6 - December 15, 2017

A University of Delaware Library exhibition on the Letters from a Pennsylvania Farmer. “John Dickinson: Penman of the Revolution,” marks the 250th anniversary of the first published essay in the series and celebrates Dickinson’s extraordinary life and career. The Great Debate: Thomas Jefferson & John Dickinson

Sunday, November 19th 2017 - 2:00 PM

Listen to Thomas Jefferson and John Dickinson debate the issues concerning the new nation. Meet and question John Dickinson and Thomas Jefferson during the reception. Debate 2-3 pm, Reception with refreshments 3-4 pm. Thomas Jefferson will be portrayed by Steve Edenbo, and John Dickinson will be played by Doug Thomas, both of the American Historical Theatre.

Friends of the John Dickinson Mansion Holiday Gathering

Sunday, December 3, 2017 - 3-4 PM

The Friends of the John Dickinson Mansion will entertain guests with a holiday gathering in the John Dickinson Plantation’s historic mansion house. The holiday gathering will feature refreshments and spirits of the era. Reservations for the holiday party are required in advance by sending $35 per person to the Friends of the John Dickinson Mansion, P.O. Box 1110, Dover, DE 19903, by Monday, Nov. 20, 2017. Checks should be made payable to the Friends of the John Dickinson Mansion.

John Dickinson: America's Rights Advocate

The public is invited to delve into the works of Founding Father John Dickinson with retired Delaware Supreme Court Justice, scholar, and author Randy J. Holland, who will speak on “John Dickinson: America’s Rights Advocate.” in Morris Library. A reception will follow the lecture.

Stories of African-American History From St. Jones Neck

Learn about the free and enslaved African-Americans who lived on the John Dickinson Plantation through this document workshop. Participants will read copies of 18th century documents to investigate the lives of the free and enslaved people who lived on the Plantation.
