Zwaanendael named best museum in Sussex County
Coastal Style Magazine has recently named the Zwaanendael Museum the best museum in Sussex County, Delaware as part of its Best of Coastal Style 2021 awards. The museum’s listing can be found in the Sussex County/Our Community section on the magazine’s Announcing the Winners page.
The Zwaanendael Museum was built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the state’s first European colony, Swanendael, established by the Dutch along Hoorn Kill (present-day Lewes-Rehoboth Canal) in 1631. Designed by E. William Martin (architect of Legislative Hall and the Hall of Records in Dover), the museum is modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, and features a stepped facade gable with carved stonework and decorated shutters. The museum’s exhibits and presentations provide a showcase for Lewes-area maritime, military and social history.
Coastal Style Magazine’s Best of 2021 is a celebration of the very best the Eastern Shore has to offer in the categories of Art, Beauty and Style, Fitness and Recreation, Food and Beverage, For the Home, Healthcare, Our Community, Pets, Professional, Shopping and Services, and Weddings. Eligible organizations in Sussex County, Delaware; and Dorchester, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester counties in Maryland were nominated, and the winners selected, by the magazine’s readership.
Award winners will be celebrated in the Best of 2021 Party that will take place on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Seacrets bar and restaurant in Ocean City, Maryland.
