"Swing into Summer": First Saturday in the First State Event
Dover's Museum Square on June 2, 2007

Dover, Delaware - May 29, 2007 Visitors to Dover's Museum Square will have an opportunity to celebrate the end of another school year with the "Swing into Summer" program that will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2007.

Kicking off the lazy days of summer with a strawberry social at the Museum of Small Town Life, guests will learn about the social and community aspects of strawberries and how this tasty treat continues to help welcome in the summer months. The program will demonstrate how vinegar transformed strawberries into a refreshing strawberry switchel drink in early America. Visitors will receive a recipe for strawberry shortcake and are invited to share their own recipes and creations.

Programs at the Delaware Archaeology Museum will explore early fishing methods where visitors will have an opportunity to experience hands-on spear fishing and dip netting techniques in a replica pond; while the Johnson Victrola Museum will showcase the majestic baritone voice of Paul Robeson in celebration of Black Music Month. Utilizing authentic Victor sound recordings and equipment, guests will experience the music and learn the stories of a man that went on to become an actor, singer, and political activist throughout the world.

Museum Square, located at 375 S. New St. between North St. and Bank Lane, in Dover, Delaware, is open from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday and most holidays. Admission is free. Donations are accepted and appreciated. For additional information, call the Delaware Visitor Center at (302) 739-4266.

Museum Square is administered by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA), an agency of the State of Delaware working in partnership with the First State Heritage Park at Dover. HCA enhances Delaware's quality of life by preserving the state's unique historical heritage, fostering community stability and economic vitality, and providing educational programs and assistance to the general public on Delaware history and heritage. In addition to its museums, HCA operates two conference centers and manages over thirty historic properties across Delaware. Funding for HCA's museums, programs, and services is provided by annual appropriations from the Delaware General Assembly, revenue from HCA's History Stores, and grants from the National Park Service, a federal agency.
