Remember Me: Stories About Delaware's African-Americans, 1700s-1800s

October 17, 2005 through July 31, 2006
Delaware State Visitors Center and Galleries

Delaware's African American history is brought to life in the interactive exhibit, Remember Me: Stories About Delaware's African Americans, 1700s-1800s. This exhibit tells the stories of a variety of the state's 18th and 19th century African Americans including a family of fugitive slaves utilizing the Underground Railroad, Delaware's contingent of United States Colored Troops who fought in the American Civil War, and such notable individuals as James Summers, William Henry Neal, John Vining, and Dinah, a slave owned by Samuel Dickinson.

The exhibit gives a personal, human face and voice to the thousands of men, women, and children of African descent who endured slavery, experienced restrictions, survived kidnapping, witnessed injustices, expressed patriotism, and resided as freemen in Delaware during the 1700s and 1800s.

In addition to this exhibit, the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs invites visitors to experience expanded African American stories at other historic sites, including the New Castle Court House Museum in historic New Castle, and the John Dickinson Plantation near Dover. Please call the Delaware State Visitors Center at (302) 739-4266 to obtain hours of operation for these museum sites.
