Archaeology Month Program at the John Dickinson Plantation

(Dover, Delaware - May 8, 2007) - Visitors to Dover, Delaware's historic John Dickinson Plantation will have an opportunity to dig deeply into the exciting field of archaeological exploration during a series of public programs that will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2007 in celebration of Delaware Archaeology Month. Held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Archaeological Society of Delaware, the May 12 public programs will include the following:

  • 12:45 p.m. - An archaeological tour of the John Dickinson Plantation led by archaeologists Alice Guerrant of the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA) and Wade Catts of John Milner Associates.


  • 1:45 p.m. - An introduction to the Archaeological Society of Delaware's archaeological training program by HCA archaeologist Craig Lukezic.


  • 2 p.m. - An introductory lecture on archaeological excavations by historian John Martin.


  • 2:45 p.m. - An introductory lecture on Lithic analysis by archaeologist David Clark of the Delaware Department of Transportation.


  • 3:30 p.m. - A lecture on 17th century Delaware by State Archaeologist Charles Fithian.


  • 4:15 p.m. - A lecture on Bronze Age Transylvania by Josef Nagy of Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
  • The John Dickinson Plantation is the boyhood home and country estate of John Dickinson, "Penman of the Revolution" and one of Delaware's signers of the United States Constitution. The Plantation features Dickinson's original 1740 brick home, reconstructed farm buildings, and a log'd dwelling, surrounded by rich agricultural lands stretching down to the banks of the St. Jones River.

    Delaware Archaeology Awareness Month is designed to promote the study and conservation of Delaware's archaeological resources and to reflect on the vital role of archaeology in revealing the cultural legacy of the state. Delaware Archaeology Month programs feature an array of state-wide activities including archaeological digs, children's hands-on learning sessions, lectures, demonstrations, festivals, and exhibits.
