George Washington, 1802
Passed in resolution by the Delaware General Assembly on January 10, 1800, this nearly life-size portrait was acquired "...in consequence of the eventful and ever to be lamented death of the late illustrious chief and friend of America General George Washington." It is one of the very first and largest of portraits to be commissioned (26 days) after Washington's death.
Painted by Denis A. Volozan, the oil portrait and its frame were restored by conservators in Philadelphia, PA in 2007. The portrait hangs in the Senate of the Old State House, which re-opened in December 2007 after three years of restoration work.
